Blade of the Feathered Serpent

I had the honor of being invited to give a workshop & masterclass at the SAE Institute of Geneva. I focused on character and creature design, but my true emphasis was on the fundamental pillars of art and the cultivation of creativity. We covered topics like color, light, shape, line, edge & gradient, and together explored an exercise designed to stretch creativity and foster original thought. I gave the students only two tiny assignments: to come up with one found color that they thought was attractive, and to locate one piece of world art, from any time or location. We then used these two sources to fabricate a number of silhouettes for an object and then carry that rendering through to completion.
I referenced the unique clay-red pigment from a cave painting and a piece of Aztec art to create this... but I forced myself to generate ten silhouettes before doing so, and then asked the students to vote on their three favorites. I used those favorites to generate this final piece!
